Yellowstone

Yellowstone is not one attraction with a nearby hotel. It is a large road-based park where a split stay can save hours and current conditions can change the best day-by-day order.

Seasons

When to go.

Peak season

June–August

Most roads and services are open, but lodging, parking, and wildlife jams make early starts and a restrained daily route important. Afternoon storms and cold nights remain possible at elevation.

Shoulder season

May · September–October

Fewer visitors and active wildlife can be rewarding, but snow, freezing temperatures, and staggered facility or road closures are genuine constraints.

Off season

November–April

This is a specialized winter trip. Most roads close to regular vehicles; only the North–Northeast Entrance road is normally open year-round, weather permitting, with other areas reached by authorized oversnow transport in season.

Plan ahead

The things to book early.

Start with the reservation that would change your dates or route if it were unavailable.

In-park lodging

When reservations open
The authorized concessioner controls inventory and booking dates; availability changes throughout the year.
What tends to sell out
Preferred summer dates and locations fill early, especially where a specific base reduces daily driving.
Your next step
Search by area, not just room type. If the first choice is unavailable, recheck cancellations and compare a split stay before defaulting to one distant gateway.

Campgrounds

When reservations open
Reservation rules and operators vary by campground.
What tends to sell out
The NPS warns that park campgrounds are reserved and full far in advance.
Your next step
Follow the campground links from the current NPS page, confirm vehicle and generator rules, and never assume dispersed overflow camping is available near an entrance.

Park entry

When reservations open
Yellowstone currently does not require a vehicle reservation; an entrance pass is still required.
What tends to sell out
The entrance itself is not sold by time slot, but queues and full parking can constrain a peak day.
Your next step
Check the NPS alert and permit page before travel because rules can change; purchase a valid pass in advance if useful, but do not buy from unofficial resellers.

Calendar

Events that shape a visit.

Spring wildlife and calving

Young animals and protective adults require distance. Snow and road openings, not a wildlife wish list, should determine where a visitor can responsibly go.

Elk rut

Bull elk are especially unpredictable. Mammoth can be active, but sidewalks and buildings do not make wildlife tame; follow ranger closures and distance rules.

Seasonal road transitions

Treat the NPS live road page as the calendar. A guide's typical date is not permission to drive a closed road.

Your base

Where to stay.

A few considered starting points, with the tradeoffs alongside the recommendation.

Old Faithful / West Thumb / Grant area

Good for: Upper, Midway, and Lower geyser basins plus the southern approach and Yellowstone Lake.

Keep in mind: Far from Lamar Valley and Mammoth; Old Faithful is convenient but intensely visited.

Canyon Village

Good for: Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone, Hayden Valley, and a relatively central position on the loop.

Keep in mind: Seasonal operations and high demand; it is still a substantial drive to Old Faithful or Lamar Valley.

Mammoth / Gardiner

Good for: Mammoth terraces, the northern range, and year-round road access toward the Northeast Entrance.

Keep in mind: Long drive to the southern geyser basins. Gardiner is outside the boundary but close to the North Entrance.

West Yellowstone or another gateway

Good for: Broader lodging and dining outside the park and access through a chosen entrance.

Keep in mind: Entrance queues and repeated driving add up. A gateway is not interchangeable with an in-park base or with a different gate.

Researched profiles

These are desk-researched fit assessments, not personal stay reviews.

  • Lake Yellowstone Hotel & Cabins

A researched profile of a historic lakeside base that can improve an eastern park phase, with seasonal operations and an intentionally offline room experience.

Out & about

Places to make time for.

Upper and Midway Geyser Basins

Start early, stay on boardwalks, and use current geyser predictions as context rather than a promise. Never step around a closure for a clearer view.

Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone

Choose viewpoints on both rims selectively; parking and elevation changes make visiting every overlook a poor measure of success.

Lamar or Hayden Valley

Dawn and dusk can be productive, but safe pullouts and distance come first. Bring binoculars or a spotting scope instead of approaching.

Yellowstone Lake and quieter stops

A lakeshore walk, picnic area, or less famous basin can balance the marquee sights. Verify bear-management and trail closures that day.

Good to know

The practical details.

  • The park has no public transportation. Average NPS drive times can become much longer with wildlife, road work, weather, and parking.
  • Stay at least 100 yards from bears, wolves, and cougars and 25 yards from all other wildlife, including bison and elk. If an animal moves closer, move away.
  • Stay on boardwalks and designated trails in thermal areas. Apparent solid ground can be a thin crust over dangerously hot water.
  • Download maps and current park information before arrival. Cellular and internet service are limited and should not be part of an emergency plan.
  • Check road status, alerts, trail closures, fire information, and facility operating dates again shortly before each park day.
